Iowa City to house piano project

Downtown Iowa City is now giving an outdoor piano project a place to call home, according to the Iowa City City Council information packet.

“Play Me, I’m Yours” is a project spearheaded by British artist Luke Jerram in 2008, and numerous cities worldwide, including Iowa City, will house pianos in 2010.

Other cities participating in the public-art project are New York City and London.

Funded by private donations, Iowa City intends to begin with two pianos as a “test,” one of which is located in front of M.C. Ginsberg, 110 E. Washington St., but officials would prefer six by the completion of the project.

These pianos will be out for public enjoyment 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 10 a.m. until midnight Thursday through Saturday.

“ ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ is a provocation, inviting the public to engage with, activate, and take ownership of their urban environment” according to an authorization request filed with City Council.
