Movie Review: “Dinner For Schmucks”

By Dana Nigro

Director Jay Roach has another successfully entertaining movie to add to his collection that already includes ‘Meet the Parents’, ’50 First Dates’, and ‘Borat’.

‘Dinner for Schmucks’ centers on Tim (Paul Rudd), a slightly above average analyst who is determined to win over the love of his life Julie (Stephanie Szostak) by earning a big promotion to the 7th floor (as opposed to his already comfortable 6th floor office).

Trouble befalls Tim when his boss Lance Fender (Bruce Greenwood) tells Tim the only way to land this promotion is to bring the biggest loser to his monthly Idiot Dinner.

As fate would have it Tim literally crashes into his idiot Barry (Steve Carell) who had scurried into the road after a dead mouse. Barry’s hobbies include rodent taxidermy and staging the dead mice in famous instances such as The Last Supper, or the Mousalisa modeled after The Monalisa.

Steve Carell steals the movie with his infamous awkward antics and comedic flare. The plot thickens when Barry’s boss Therman (Zach Galifianakis) shows up at the Idiot Dinner, with his “mind control powers”.

It is only then that Rudd’s character Tim realizes what a good guy Barry is and in return he helps Barry over come Therman’s “mind control” by convincing Barry he has “brain control”. Barry then is able to overcome Therman’s mind restrains and defeat him in an epic battle of the brain.

Tim throws his promotion away but still gets the girl in the end, with an addition of an awkward but sincere friend.

Rudd and Carell’s performances were superbly entertaining and accompanied by an equally gifted cast, ‘Dinner for Schmucks’ is the best comedy of the summer.
