Field Hockey: Offensive woes keep win away from Bobcats’ grasp

By Nathaniel Maund

With eight minutes remaining in the first half, Brooke Edwards fired a shot over Drexel U. goalie Jenna Phillips’ shoulder and into the net. It appeared the junior had broken a scoreless tie with the Dragons, but Ohio U.’s column on the scoreboard remained at zero.

Edwards’ goal was disallowed because of a foot infraction, and the Bobcats lost 1-0 to Drexel (2-1) Sunday at Buckley Field in Philadelphia, Pa.

The barred goal exemplified how difficult it has been for Ohio (1-4) to score this season. Sunday’s loss marked the third time this season the Bobcats were held scoreless. All of their losses have been by one goal.

Coach Neil Macmillan was happy with his team’s overall performance, but said he was frustrated knowing Ohio could have won if it had capitalized on its chances.

“We had great opportunities on corners,” Macmillan said. “We had one effort that was a rebound off the keeper that we put over the bar. We put a goal in that was disallowed.”

The tie broke with 15 minutes remaining in the match when Drexel scored after intercepting an Ohio pass.

It marred an otherwise strong showing by the backfield, led by goalie Courtney Seiders, who had six saves.

“It’s almost like we’re asking our defense to be 100 percent and perfect throughout the game,” Macmillan said. “In our sport that’s not a realistic thing to be asking.”

The Bobcat attack this season is operating without some key players after last year’s senior class graduated three-fourths a class Macmillan said, which was the most decorated in the team’s history.

The unit lost Marcy Dull and Katelyn Shelley, who were first and third on the team in goals last season, respectively.

Despite losing players, the Bobcats returned one piece of the squad, as redshirt junior Louzeth Schutte joined the lineup after missing the 2009 season .

The defender, who Macmillan said was Ohio’s second-best player last season before injuring her shoulder, led the team with five shots on Sunday.

“We’re sitting at 1-4,” Macmillan said. “We could be 4-1, 5-0. We’ve played well enough in all the other games.”

The Bobcats began the season with a 1-0 loss to Radford on Aug. 27. They rebounded in the next match with a 6-1 victory over Saint Louis.

On Aug. 31, Ohio lost 2-1 in overtime to Ohio State U. Schutte was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week after scoring the tying goal in the match.

The Bobcats also fell to Rutgers Friday, 1-0.
