R.E.M. splits up amicably

By Courtney Warner

After three decades of losing their religion, R.E.M . has finally called it quits.

A quote posted on the band’s site indicates the split was unanimous and amicable.

“We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished,” the site said.

Mike Mills said he attributes the end because after thirty years, the band doesn’t know what else it can do in the future that’s new.

But Michael Stipe is the one who sums it up in a definitive and sagacious quote.

“A wise man once said — ‘the skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave’,” he wrote on the site. “We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we’re going to walk away from it.”

The band members leave behind them 31 years of music, 15 albums — the most recent one, “Collapse into Now,” was released this past march — and numerous hits.

Though the group says goodbye to the music world and its fans, R.E.M.’s legacy will be left inside the hearts of “shiny happy people.”
