After spending eight days in Camp Hill and the majority of his life in State College, Jerry Sandusky made the trip to his new home for the next 30 to 60 years Wednesday.

The former Penn State assistant football coach was transported to the State Correctional Institution at Greene in Waynesburg, where he was placed in protective custody for the duration of his sentence, according to a release issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

The State Correctional Institution — considered a maximum-security prison — houses about 1,800 inmates in Greene County, which now includes Sandusky, according to the release.

While in protective custody, Sandusky will spend about 23 hours of his day in his single cell, where he will eat, sleep and receive any counseling or treatment, according to the release. He will be permitted one hour of exercise per day, five days a week, and three showers per week, according to the release.

“Given the high profile nature of this individual, coupled with the nature of his crimes, this makes him very vulnerable in a prison setting,” Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said in the release.

Should Sandusky require medical attention of any kind, he will be escorted by security personnel, according to the release. All visits from those outside of the prison system will be non-contact, according to the release.

Typically, the Department of Corrections does not release information about an inmate’s security status, but Wetzel said given the notoriety of the case, they felt it was important to inform the public.

Sandusky was found guilty of 45 counts of sex abuse in late June and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison in mid-October.

Sandusky’s attorney, Joe Amendola, could not be reached for comment as of press time Wednesday.
