And so it begins. Liveblog after the jump!
2:20 p.m. LAST FOUR-PERSON (non-RA) IN HOGAN HAS BEEN TAKEN. Ruggles, RA suites, and Claremont are all the remain for four-persons.
2:19 p.m. Speculation on why nobody’s picked the Woodbridge two-bedroom. It’s really fucking hard to see. It’s buried on the far right bottom of the boards under dim lighting. Hogan 4E has been taken by 946 in the meanwhile.
2:18 p.m. We’ve heard some townhouses are getting new doors, in terms of renovations. I don’t care about my door.
2:17 p.m. H406 taken by 30/932. People seem to be preferring the upper townhouses. Desperate Townhousewives is their group name. They of course wanted townhouse all the way. This reminds me of the time a group named themselves Ruggles Magic Bunny and of course they got Ruggles. There’s strategy even with the names.
2:16 p.m. Respectful man on crutches, representative of 30/938 picks into H806—they wanted townhouse the entire way. Congrats!
2:14 p.m. We’ve been asked by a few people which floors have been renovated. The answer is ALL OF THEM except the 20th. In order you want 18th, 16th, 14th, 12th, 10th, 8th, 20th in my opinion.
2:12 p.m. EC H605 taken by Maya Fegan’s group. She’s happy. EC H806 taken as well.
2:10 p.m. Just took a glimpse at this Zach character—I can see why he’s admired.
2:09 p.m. 30/893 EC H206, they wanted highrise but they were all gone. Meanwhile, Hogan 3B by 933 was just picked into.
2:08 p.m. Geetika asking me a few questions about the various EC options. I’m kind of drowning in the craziness of liveblogging, but I kind of feel bad not helping out the person I shot in Assassins.
2:05 p.m. He’s pretty handsome.
2:03 p.m. “The guy on the right is Zach Vargas-Sullivan, who’s famous on Columbia Admirers,” says Andrea. I will see for myself if I admire him.
2:02 p.m. Holy shit, someone is here an hour before their appointment time. Mad applause from the former Shaft Master. But really, who does that?
2:00 p.m. Geetika Rudra, who I mercilessly shot in Assassins on the second day, comes with her teammate asking me for advice. They intend to pick into an EC Flat.
1:58 p.m. “Nice hat,” I remark, somewhat flirtatiously. She says she got it from her mom’s friend. And I run out of things to say for another tidal wave is coming.
1:56 p.m. 30/842 picked into EC Exclusion Suite 1804, they wanted a highrise and the dude was ok with a double. And so are we …for him.
1:54 p.m. EC 1804 taken, and that’s the first EC Exclusion snagged for the day. There are still a few Hogan 5s remaining.
1:52 p.m. Hogan 2C snagged. In unrelated news, I got out of floor hockey and someone whacked me in the ankle really hard. Still reporting from the cage though. Not the floor they wanted but they have great rooms so they’re content.
1:52 p.m. To anyone considering the Plimpton suites, they will be charged at Columbia rates.
1:46 p.m. I’d say the big surprise so far has been the group that picked a one-bedroom Watt on the first floor. Last year it went in the 22/40s. But hey, he’s happy, and again, so are we.
1:45 p.m. Eric Feder is eating an apple.
1:39 p.m. Bwog brought the music beatbox next to them and are blaring it on max. Playing some disco song that’s making me somewhat distraught. I guess this is what I get for playing “I Just Had Sex” on repeat last year. #karma
1:36 p.m. There was a suite in Harmony that as of yesterday was going to be an eight-person suite, but now it’s a six-person suite and a two-person. That’ll most likely go deep in junior selection. Six-person junior groups are catching a huge break with the opening of the Plimpton suites.
1:35 p.m. For now though, life is good.
1:34 p.m. Ah crap, complete silence. Another tidal wave coming up in about six minutes… (check earlier for the reference).
1:30 p.m. Lotto 750 picks into Woodbridge 5H over the two-bedroom option, citing more space and a better view. I’m joined by Andrea-Garcia-Vargas and Eric Feder.
1:28 p.m. EC 1609, another flat, gone. 16th floor is going now.
1:27 p.m. He’s really excited, this is the best lottery number he’s had. First time he’s gotten to live with his friends. First time going through the housing process, previous a rider. Picked into Hogan 5E.
1:26 p.m. EC 1603 and 1607, a pair of flats, were snagged.
1:22 p.m. Varsity Show cast of Phineas and the writer Solomon picked into the last 5-person all-single highrise in EC, 1020. Ha Ha, Ha Ha, 1020. Fun fact nobody cares about: I’ve never been to 1020. Phineas is sporting a dapper yellow and blue tie.
1:20 p.m. On Woodbridge 7J, Roko Rumora says “I get to live with my best friend and if she’s annoying I can close the door.
1:20 p.m. Overheard: “it’s so nice to pick on the first day.” It’s the best feeling in the world.
1:16 p.m. One Woodbridge 2-person left! 7I if you’re interested.
1:15 p.m. Lottery #674 they picked based on the coloring of the floorplan. H405 felt like a good number to them. That was just the second six-person townhouse taken so far. Highrises have been a clear preference so far. Woodbridge 7J has been taken too.
1:14 p.m. Hogan 6E snagged. They preferred the Broadway facing view but they’re happy. And so are we.
1:12 p.m. A group of four just picked into a six-person RA suite, H505. They don’t know the RA. Overheard at the Bwog table: “I’ll wear your stickers all day if you tell me who the RA is.”
1:09 p.m. Right now a ton of groups are deliberating inside the cage. As a liveblogger I’m not a big fan when this happens. Like salmon, I prefer the current come in a constant stream than in a choppy tidal wave. Actually, I have no fucking clue how salmon like their water.
1:07 p.m. A note about the Plimpton suites. Only all-female groups can pick into them. I expect them to go during or after Ruggles suite selection.
1:06 p.m. Mikey taking over here in style. EAST CAMPUS SIX-PERSON HIGHRISES ARE GONE! They cut off at 30/668.
12:10 p.m. All quiet on the eastern front of John Jay, as it’s just us and Bwog recalibrating our numbers. We’ve updated all the rooms that have been taken, just have to fix the numbers on the whiteboard. See you after the break!
11:55 a.m. We’ve just learned that 30/391 dropped to Online Selection, presumably to get some nice singles or maybe shoot for Watt studio singles. There’s only one more group left in the cage before lunch break.
11:51 a.m. Only one EC six-person all-singles highrise left, and it’s 802. 1002 was just taken by 30/609, who are “super happy” they got one of the coveted suites.
11:49 a.m. Hogan 2D, the last D line, goes to 30/617. It’s a little mellow here as it’s almost lunch time, but I do spy the candy being refilled across the room.
11:41 a.m. A pick into Woodbridge! 6H is snagged by 30/598, citing its spaciousness. Meanwhile, 30/580 takes the last EC 4-person townhouse. Repeat: EC 4-PERSON TOWNHOUSES ARE GONE.
11:38 a.m. Another five-person, all-singles highrise goes with EC 820 to group 30/550. All smiles, they say it’s just what they were expecting.
11:36 a.m. Dylan Smith comes out of the cage. Mikey notes that he killed him in Assassins. “He’s like an Assassins god. His name is ChunkMuff.” Dylan et. al. picked EC 1220, a five-person, all-singles highrise.
11:33 a.m. 30/565 emerges from the cage. We ask where they’re living. They say, “Should we tell them?” They decide to, but they’re actually not sure. Turns out it’s EC 1801. Mikey congratulates Christopher of this suite, who shakes his hand and compliments his shirt. Mikey just said, “I love him.”
11:31 a.m. 30/494 takes Hogan 6A. In other news, there’s no music playing. Doesn’t Housing want to get their jam on with these happy to-be seniors?
11:29 a.m. “What was it, Hogan 5B? I don’t know, I’m just the proxy.”
11:24 a.m. Finn here taking over for average-looking Mikey. JK, he’s handsome too. 30/483 picked into EC 1420. “We chose it over 1020,” says Spectrum senior staff blogger Jenne O’Brien ruefully. “It was exactly what we wanted. All our dreams have come true,” Misha Solomon, CC ’14 and noted Canadian, said.
11:21 a.m. EC 1202, another six-person highrise taken. They were set on a highrise from the beginning, and they got it. That’s determination folks. The handsome Finn is taking over now.
11:17 a.m. WHOA, someone picked into Watt 1L, a one-bedroom. They wanted the common space over the EC flat. People really dig living rooms this year.
11:16 a.m. I’m trying to think of something funny to say, but I’m just too tired. Just to repeat, Watt 2-Bedrooms are gone, there’s one 4-person townhouse left in EC, two four-person options were blocked off this year, and people are mostly happy right now.
11:12 a.m. Hogan 5C taken by 30/415. Hogan 4C goes next at 30/458.
11:11 a.m. 1807, higher the better, and it’s renovated. Indeed. Big applause for the people who picked on the 18th floor.
11:09 a.m. EC 1807, another flat has been taken. Now that the Watt 2-bedrooms are gone EC flats are a hot option. No Woodbridge two-bedrooms have been taken yet.
11:05 a.m. Housing asks a group, what are you thinking about? They respond in unison, “Hogan!” Hogan Hopefuls, comments Cecilia.
11:03 a.m.Candy update: Housing has apples, twizzlers, junior mints, cow tales, AIR HEADS, sour patch kids, Reeses, and lollipops. Overheard: “sour patch kids, this is the best thing in my life.”
11:02 a.m. EC 1803 is gone. It was their first pick, they are “super happy.”
10:57 a.m. Handsome Finn and his group, with lottery number 30/399 have picked into EC 1602. “Someone before us picked into the 20th floor, which was unrenovated, so we’re really happy about it.”
10:56 a.m. Mikey taking over now, accompanied by Finn, who is about to pick into EC 1602, and Cecilia Reyes, from the news section.
10:52 a.m. Jake Obeng-Bediako, CC ’14, and his group just took Hogan 3D with 30/322. His other group member said that they opted “for the view.”
10:49 a.m.There’s only one 4-person townhouse left in EC.
10:48 a.m. Spectator regrets the error wherein at 10:02 a.m. we speculated that the “other liveblogger” was late and would be here at 10:15 a.m. That liveblogger was me and it was not 10:15.
10:44 a.m. Claire Kao, CC ’14, and her group picked into Hogan 6C with lottery number 30/236. She said it was “contentious…hahahaha.”
10:41 a.m.Girl that took the second-to-last Watt two-bedroom said she feels “fairly lucky.” Why Watt? “It’s so nice!”
10:37 a.m. Watt two-bedrooms are gone! The cut-off was at 30/309.
10:32 a.m. Watt 4F is now off the table, leaving 2 two-bedrooms left.
10:29 a.m. Melanie Quiroz, CC ’14, just picked into Hogan 5D with lottery number 30/208. She picked Hogan over EC because it’s cleaner and has a better layout.
10:26 a.m. Girl with lottery number 30/198 just picked into EC H802, a four-person townhouse. She feels “okay, I guess.”
10:21 a.m. Just to repeat, Plimpton six-persons are an option this year—Mikey’s guess is they’ll go late in junior selection after Ruggles is gone.
10:17 a.m. Watt 5F and 2F taken. They wanted more hosting space. Five two-bedrooms left in Watt.
10:16 a.m. Jillian Kumagai taking over for the (self-professed) handsome Mikey Zhong.
10:13 a.m. Group 30/175 just picked into EC 2020. They preferred 1820 though. Oh, the agony of such an awful lottery number.
10:13 a.m. The prior group, on picking Watt over EC, “it[EC] is a little dormy,” – Leah Byland, CC ’14.
10:12 a.m. Housing God Eric Feder departs.
10:10 a.m. Watt 5L has been taken by 30/190. Finn is still here and he’s still handsome. Watt is dropping like it’s hawt (good rhyme?)
10:08 a.m. 30/139 picks into a six-person highrise in EC on the 18th floor (1802). The 18th floor, the one that will be renovated this summer, is going quickly as expected.
10:03 a.m.Group picks into the all-single on the 16th floor of EC. “Shit went down” deciding between EC. They had 18 their sophomore year. “I’m just a really lucky person.” “I hear people get 2000s every year and I’m like, what mirror did you break?” She (the legendary Claire Parker I’ve heard of before) lives a good life.
10:02 a.m.Lotto # 130 picks into Watt 3F, a two-bedroom. These have been hot early on. Just to reiterate, five EC flats, and a Watt 2-Bedroom were excluded from Housing, which will make some two-person groups unhappy.
10:02 a.m. The handsome Finn Vigeland, with lottery number 30/399, has arrived. I repeat, he is handsome. The other liveblogger is late. I’ve got my money on a 10:15 arrival.
10:00 a.m. Mikey taking over. The last group’s press release: “hashtag, renovated.”
9:58 a.m. First EC 6-person townhouse is gone, H705, courtesy of 30/109.
9:56 a.m. Housing Director comments that Stressbusters would be a great addition to In-Person selection – we agree. Mikey claims to have back problems.
9:52 a.m. First EC highrise five-person, 1820, is gone, courtesy of 30/96.
9:50 a.m. Former Spec Design Editor Maya Fegan drops by to take candy and laugh in our faces. See? It’s easy to stop by and say hi.
9:48 a.m. Another Watt two-bedroom (6L) and four-person EC townhouse (H402) down – 30/98 & 30/93. Can I have one too?
9:45 a.m. Just wanted to give the heads up that as we’re still sorting things out, whiteboard counts may be a little off – this should only be relevant for rising juniors and sophomores however.
9:44 a.m. And our first Watt two-bedroom and four-person EC townhouse are gone. Watt 3L and EC H201. Lottery numbers 90 and 85 respectively.
9:41 a.m. Just got a notification here on Mikey’s laptop that it’s time for his morning stretches – guess he’s going to need to step out for a little bit.
9:38 a.m. Hogan 6D just snagged by the second group! Should be interesting to watch Hogan and EC duke it out in the first few hours.
9:32 a.m. Douglas Kessel here, taking over for the meanwhile as Mikey buzzes about. Stay tuned.
9:29 a.m. The first group, consisting of two soccer players, has not picked yet. However they did their research and with the first overall pick of the 2013 Housing Lottery, they will elect to pick into a two-person EC flat, 1809. They were also considering Watt Studio Singles and a Watt Two-Bedroom. Congratulations!
9:21 a.m. There’s also some interesting updates to the Harmony floor plans: it looks like they’re redoing the Mezz, 1st and 2nd floors. The Mezz will have an eight-person suite w/ 2 doubles. The 1st floor will have a six-person suite w/ 1 double. The 2nd floor will have four corridor doubles available with room sizes 184, 201, 242, and 265.
9:19 a.m. Also worth noting: the room sizes in Symposium, which used to be gargantuan, have been downsized a bit — they’re all less than 280 square feet now. It’s doubtful that they’re actually making any renovations, so perhaps the original measurements were wrong?
9:17 a.m. Oh we actually missed a four-person Ruggles suite that’s been held out. So that’s two out of the four.
9:14 a.m. EC 801, 809, 1001, 1201, and 1009 — all two-person suites — have been blocked off as well. Bad news for two-person groups…
9:12 a.m. Other options not available from the outset: one Watt one-bedroom and one Watt two-bedroom along with a Ruggles four-person suite on the third floor. 6B and 7G in Woodbridge too…
9:10 a.m. We’re not due to start for another 20 minutes, but first HUGE shocker: PLIMPTON IS AVAILABLE!! That’s right — Columbis students will be able to pick into Plimpton directly. There are three six-person suites available, each with 4 singles, 1 double. Presumably, it will get taken around the same time as the six-person townhouses with a double. However, in other news, the penthouse Hogan suite (a six-person suite) will not be available, so the six-person cutoff won’t change by too much.
