Gourmet popcorn pops up as a new food trend

From cupcakes to frozen yogurt to crepes, food trends are constantly changing, with new treats popping up everywhere. The newest trend making its way to Utah is gourmet popcorn, and Rooster’s Gourmet Popcorn is leading the way.

Rooster’s Gourmet Popcorn opened last November in South Jordan, and has become a popular place to find a classic treat. Rooser’s owner Holly Walker-Roose got the idea for the store while she was visiting family in Texas.

“We came upon a couple of popcorn stores like the one I have right now, and I knew that this concept would be great for the family environment of Utah,” Walker-Roose said. “I researched the idea and opened my doors.”

The popcorn shop offers over 60 different flavors of popcorn ranging from savory to candied, and even has chocolate popcorn.

Adrienne Glahe, store manager of Rooster’s, enjoys discovering and experimenting with new popcorn flavors.

“We pick out foods we really like and try to find a way to make them into flavors,” Glahe said. “We’re always accepting new flavor ideas and new concepts.”

The most popular flavors offered at Rooster’s are a buffalo wing/ranch mix, a soda mix and a chocolate Oreo mix. The staff uses a secret candied process to create dozens of unique and varied flavors. Walker-Roose said some of the shop’s flavors came from customer suggestions.

“Our buffalo wing/ranch mix was a customer inspired idea,” Glahe said. “Our coconut curry flavor was inspired by a high schooler. He really just wanted to try it out, so we did.”

In order to continue to please customers and make business pop, Walker-Roose is working to expand Rooster’s social media presence and gain more insight from customers.

Rooster’s popcorn can be purchased in a variety of sizes. The six-cup junior size and the 42-cup large size are the most popular options, but popcorn enthusiasts can go big for 275 cups party bag. Rooster’s also provides catering at special events and has been a huge hit.

“We have helped people with parties ranging from missionary homecomings/farewells, baby showers, wedding receptions, corporate events, large Christmas events, fundraisers and just large down home parties and get-togethers,” Walker-Roose said.

Popcorn bars and stores are an up and coming trend in the world of desserts and treats. Carly Heinz, a Lehi resident, has had similar popcorn while on vacation in Las Vegas and is excited to try Rooster’s Gourmet Popcorn.

“I recently tried gourmet popcorn for the first time and it was amazing,” Heinz said. “It’s exciting to know that a similar specialty store exists in Utah.”

Though Rooser’s is a bit of a drive from Provo, it has attracted many students.

“BYU students love our popcorn because it fits well within the fun, clean image that BYU stands for,” Walker-Roose said.

Glahe thinks popcorn will catch on well with college students and families because it is a cheap and easy snack.

“Popcorn is a big snack for Family Home Evenings or for when people are watching movies,” Glahe said. “It is easy for the young kids to eat. It’s fun and it’s colorful and we have a lot of flavors.”

Walker-Roose is aiming to expand Rooster’s franchises, and hopes to move south and open a store in American Fork by next summer. She hopes that adding more locations will expand her market to a larger variety of customers.
