UCLA admissions rate drops below 20 percent

UCLA’s admission rate for freshmen dropped below 20 percent for the first time this year amid growing numbers of applicants and increasing competition.

UCLA accepted only 18.2 percent of its freshman applicants for the 2014-2015 year, or 15,760 of a total 86,521 students who applied. Last year, it accepted 20.1 percent.

However, UC Berkeley is the most competitive campus in the University of California, accepting 17.3 percent of its applicants.

UCLA admitted 2.6 percent less freshmen than last year. The UC as a whole continued to accept greater numbers of applicants – this year it accepted 86,865.

The UC also accepted more nonresident students than last year. It admitted 17.6 percent more international students and 8.9 percent more out-of-state students.

The University has increased the number of nonresident students to boost student fee revenue in light of historically lower state funds.

UCLA’s numbers of international and out-of-state students did not change significantly. UCLA accepted 4,095 out-of-state students, one more than last year, and 2,537 international students, seven fewer than last year.

Friday’s admissions data do not include referral and waitlist offers.
