Habitat for Humanity runs to raise funds for Homecoming Build

The UNC Charlotte chapter of Habitat for Humanity will be hosting their first annual Run for Home 5k race at 5 p.m. on Saturday April 26.

The race will begin on the greenway, take a loop around the football field and finish out the remaining 3.1 miles on the greenway.

Proceeds from the race will go towards the UNC Charlotte Homecoming Build. The Homecoming Build is the building of a house in the weeks prior to homecoming. The house is then unveiled on homecoming and later transported to a family in need in the Charlotte area. Last year $85,000 was raised for the Inaugural Homecoming Build.

Habitat for Humanity Special Events Coordinator Brooke Dunham hopes to see anyone and everyone participating in the race.

“The Homecoming Build is organized to bring together the community, faculty and staff and since we are fundraising for the Homecoming Build we still hope to bring the community together through the race,” said Dunham.

Dunham looks forward to seeing how the event comes together on race day.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the people and sponsors that come out and how that all comes together,” said Dunham.

Packet pickup will begin at 3:45 p.m. on the day of the race and will continue until the race begins. There will also be an on-site raffle for people in attendance to participate in.

Online registration will be open until midnight on April 25 at: http://www.uncchabitat.org/run-for-home-5k.html. Registration is $12, but $17 if you would like a shirt. Volunteers can also sign up on the website to help out with the setup and breakdown of the race.

The UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity chapter was founded in 2009 and is currently at around 30 members. The chapter works closely with the Charlotte chapter throughout the year on various builds.
