Senior center fielder Lauren Moreno’s walk-off single in the ninth inning broke a scoreless tie to help Cal Poly split a doubleheader against Cal State Bakersfield at Bob Janssen Field on Tuesday.

Moreno singled to bring home senior catcher Mariah Cochiolo with two outs in the inning and effectively moved Cal Poly to 26-17 on the year with the game-winner.

The Mustangs dropped the first game of the twinbill — which also went into extra innings — 7-5 after the Roadrunners scored two in the top of the eighth inning of that game.

“Coming back from Hawaii, I was pretty confident about these games,” Moreno said. “We kind of let the first one go, but I knew we were going to come back and win (the second game). And it just gets me even that much more excited for this weekend, coming up against Fullerton because these games are going to be some pretty good games for us.”

Moreno was 0 for 7 in the doubleheader before her ninth inning heroics, while Cal Poly was held to just two hits entering the final frame.

Freshman right-hander Sierra Hyland allowed just one hit and no runs in seven innings before junior lefty Chloe Wurst (5-9) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win in the circle.

Cal Poly stays home to host Cal State Fullerton for a three-game series this weekend. The Mustangs and Titans are tied for third place in the Big West standings and trail first-place Long Beach State by three games and UC Santa Barbara by one.
