Oregon running backs in three-way tie on South Dakota game depth chart

The Oregon football team released their depth chart for the upcoming season opener against South Dakota. Despite the game being just under a week away, the Ducks have yet to settle the majority of their positions groups.

Among the new named starters however, was track standout Devon Allen. He was listed ahead of Chance Allen and is the only other listed starting wide receiver at the moment aside from Keanon Lowe.

“Devon did everything right,” Scott Frost said. “Obviously he’s a world class athlete, he’s got a world class work ethic, he’s really smart, he’s tough and we’re excited to see what he can do.”

Another intriguing battle currently going on is between the three running backs in Thomas Tyner, Byron Marshall and Royce Freeman.

“It just shows that we are all competing with each other and we have great competition,” Tyner said. “We’re all working really hard for that spot.”

The three are currently in what running backs coach Gary Campbell described as a “three-way tie” and will likely remain as is until further notice.

“I got it as a three-way tie right now,” Campbell said. “It’s a or, or, or (situation), so we’ll see as the week goes on.”

Freeman, who is a freshman, isn’t out of the equation and appears to have a legitimate chance to start this weekend.

“We don’t try and temper our expectations for freshman,” Campbell said. “We tell every guy that comes in that he’s here to play. We don’t plan on redshirting anybody. Every guy we bring in here we want to prepare them to be a starter and he (Royce Freeman) came in with that attitude and he’s come along real well.”

Oregon will play South Dakota at Autzen Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is set for a 7:30 p.m. PST start.
