Oregon volleyball takes Central Arkansas in straight sets

The Oregon volleyball team (2-0) recorded their second straight win of the season against Central Arkansas (0-2). After winning their season opener against Ohio State (0-1) last night, the Ducks will now enter their final game against Illinois State (1-0) at the Oregon Invitational with a 2-0 record.

It was another good outing for the Ducks all around. In addition to holding a 36.5 attack percentage, the Ducks also recorded 40 assists between freshman Maggie Scott and Shellsy Ashen. The two combined for 35 in their previous game against the Buckeyes.

Oregon also continued their success on the defensive end. The Ducks not only picked up 10.5 blocks as a team, but they also held the Sugar Bears to 13.4 percent from the field.

While it’s early in the season, the Ducks already look to be molding as a team. With the integration of a handful of new players, the Ducks may have a new approach from a schematic point, but it looks to be working early on.

The Ducks had no trouble with the Sugar Bears aside from a momentary lapse in the third set. Oregon took set one 25-19 then followed with a 25-19 win in the second. And despite Central Arkansas trailing 17-14 late in the third set, the Ducks managed to take seven of the last 10 points to secure the sweep.

Leading the way for the Ducks were Liz Brenner and Scott. Brenner finished with a team-high kills on 38.1 percent hitting, while Scott recorded a team-high 21 assists. The freshman setter now has 39 assists in her first two collegiate games.

Oregon has one final game remaining at the Oregon Invitational and it will be against Illinois State at 3 p.m. today.
