On Friday, Aug. 22, the film “Are You Here,” which was shot in and around Winston-Salem, hit select theatres.

The film stars Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Amy Poehler, and was directed by Matthew Weiner, the creator of “Mad Men.”

While the film has received mixed reviews, Winston-Salem has been thrust into the spotlight. In the movie, viewers get a glimpse of downtown Winston-Salem. In addition to Winston-Salem, the film was shot in other North Carolina locations.

When the filming took place back in 2012, restaurants and shops saw an increase in business. Some of the actors dined at local restaurants such as Mozelle’s and 6th and Vine. The actors also rented out apartments in the area.

The movie is centered around Ben Baker (Galifianakis) and Steve Dallas (Wilson), best friends that travel back home for the funeral of Baker’s father. While watching this film, audience members will learn about friendship, family and the struggle to grow up.

This independently produced film is showing right now in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, Detroit, Tampa, Denver and Orlando. It is also available on iTunes for purchase or rent.

This is not the only movie to be recently filmed in Winston-Salem. “The Longest Ride,” a film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks’ novel, just recently finished shooting scenes at Wake Forest University.
