University should work to preserve fading languages

Some University of Minnesota faculty members in the Department of American Indian Studies are waging a push to create undergraduate major programs for the Ojibwe and Dakota languages, the Minnesota Daily reported Wednesday.

There’s an alarmingly small number of people currently alive who speak this language, and it must be a part of the University’s mission to do all it reasonably can to help prevent these languages from disappearing.

We praise those faculty members advocating for these major programs and hope they get the support they need.
