Berkeley resident dies after traffic collision in Berkeley Hills

Berkeley resident and local cyclist Kurt Wehner died Monday afternoon after a collision with a vehicle in the Berkeley Hills on Sunday morning. He was 62.

Wehner passed away about 4 p.m. Monday at Highland Hospital in Oakland, according to the Alameda County coroner’s office. He collided with the vehicle at the intersection of Spruce and Eunice streets at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, according to a Berkeley Police Department alert. He sustained several life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Wehner died of extensive blunt trauma to the chest and head, according to the Coroner’s Bureau.

In a press release Monday, BPD spokesperson Officer Jennifer Coats said traffic investigators were actively working on the case. The driver of the vehicle, a 63-year-old Berkeley resident, is cooperating with the investigation.
