Cal Poly chocolate bars potentially contaminated with undeclared allergens including peanuts, milk and soy — and possibly exposed to microbial contamination — have been recalled by the food science and nutrition (FSN) department along with the Cal Poly Corporation, according to a press release sent out by the university on Saturday.

According to university spokesperson Matt Lazier, the potentially contaminated bars were processed on equipment that may have experienced product buildup, meaning the allergens could have made contact with chocolate bars that did not originally contain those ingredients. This operations failure occurred late Oct. 3, and the bars were recalled immediately after.

Non-flavored bars (milk and dark chocolate) were processed on different equipment and are safe for consumption, Lazier said.

As of Monday, there were no reports of illness to confirm the contamination.

The FSN department and Cal Poly Corporation voluntarily issued a recall for flavored chocolate bars out of an abundance of caution, the release states.

Cal Poly chocolates are produced by students in Advanced Enterprise Project (FSN 401). It is the only university-based, chocolate production course in the country that uses exclusively organic and Fair Trade Certified chocolate.

The chocolate bars are sold at retail outlets and farmers’ markets around the Central Coast, at on-campus locations and online through the Cal Poly bookstore.

Customers can bring affected products back to the store where they purchased them for a full refund, or call at the FSN department at (805) 756-2660.
