Dean of Students Jean DeCosta sent a campus-wide email this past Saturday warning against hateful speech and actions among Cal Poly students. Recent incidents include vandalism to vehicles on campus and degrading Facebook posts, the email said.

“Such acts have no place in the Cal Poly family,” DeCosta’s email said.

University spokesperson Matt Lazier said in an email to Mustang News that the dean’s email alluded to incidents currently under investigation by University Police Department (UPD), so no other details are available.

“It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time,” Lazier’s email said, “other than to reiterate (DeCosta’s) message in saying that these sorts of occurrences have no place at the university and do not reflect the values of inclusivity and diversity that we expect of all members of the campus community.”

While DeCosta’s email referred to multiple “Facebook posts degrading women,” Lazier said the only such post he knew of was one signed by two members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

The alleged vandalism to vehicles on campus was unrelated to the Pi Kappa Alpha Facebook post, Lazier said.
