After the recent indictment, or lack thereof of Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson by the grand jury, protests have outraged throughout the nation, one of which occurred on UNC Charlotte’s campus this Tuesday.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NCAAP), an on-campus organization gathered in front of the Student Union, along with members of the student body to form a peaceful protest.

“Today we gathered in the fight for social justice,” said Aviance Brown, president of UNC Chalortte’s NCAAP chapter. “It’s important that we stand up and stand together. So we came together to commemorate the death of Mike Brown and the social injustice issues that constantly plague our society.”

Attendees were dressed in all black, in remembrance of the late Michael Brown. Some protestors held signs, which read statements such as “GOD BLESS AMERIKKKA,” “NO justice, NO silence,” and “BLACK LIVES MATTER.”

“The main message that we want to get out is that we, as young people, have to act, regardless of whether you’re black, white, Hispanic, Latino or whatever the case may be,” said Aviance. “We have to stand up and do something about this, because if we don’t, this will only continue.”

When asked about her opinion on the protests which took place in Ferguson on the night of the indictment, Aviance said, “I think that it’s necessary for them to protest peacefully…I understand that it’s hard to hold back after all this pain, but it’s something that we have to stop. We can’t respond violently, because that never solves the issue, and we will never be taken serious if we always respond in a violent manner.”
