Fraternities that participate in community service events on March 31 will be tentatively taken off social probation for the day, allowing them to host registered social events in the early evening.

After Cesar Chavez Day, greek life will be put back on social probation until the Students Taking Action Towards University Safety (STATUS) plan has been approved by the National Panhellenic Council. Sororities will not be on social probation for the one day either, but national rules prevent them from hosting parties.

“Combining service with registered social events is something that we should be doing in the future anyhow, and I think it’s a great statement for greek life in terms of pairing up an event that honors somebody who was a huge leader in community relations and community service,” environmental management protection junior and Interfraternity Council (IFC) Vice President of Community Relations David Yocom said.

President Armstrong approved the STATUS plan last week. Once National Panhellenic Council approves the plan, greek life will be taken off social probation for good.

All of the fraternity chapters are in accordance with the plan, according to Yocom.

“I’m excited to get started with the items on the STATUS plan. We have a lot to accomplish, and I’m excited to see how much work IFC can actually put behind them,” IFC President Alex Horncliff said.

Chapters that participate in at least 2-4 hours of community service in the morning of March 31 will be allowed to register social events as long as they end by 8 p.m.

Chapters planning on participating in service include Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Pi, Nu Alpha Kappa, Delta Sigma Phi, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Lamba Chi Alpha, Delta Chi, Zeta Beta Tau, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Sigma Kappa and Alpha Gamma Rho.

About half of the chapters will partake in neighborhood and beach cleanups. Some chapters will work with One Cool Earth to plant trees. One chapter is planning on working at the Children’s Resource Network in Arroyo Grande.

“Some are geared toward the beach because the beach is usually the center around the Cesar Chavez Day party, so instead of making it a morning party, we are trying to make it a morning service event at the beach,” Yocom said.
