Coming into Saturday afternoon’s matchup against Cal State Fullerton, two games stood between the Cal Poly softball team and second place in the Big West Conference standings.

The Mustangs were close to securing a win in a rainy first game against Cal State Fullerton, but allowed a late run to give the Titans the 5-4 victory. In a back-and-forth game, it was ultimately a wild pitch by Cal Poly pitcher Sierra Hyland that was the difference.

Entering the fifth inning with the game tied at 1-1, a single from sophomore second baseman Ashley Tornio put the Mustangs ahead. Her base hit to center field scored two runs and double by junior first baseman Breana West tacked on another. The three runs gave Cal Poly the lead, but it did not hold for long.

In the bottom half of the inning Cal State Fullerton answered with three runs of its own. The Titans then broke the tie when they scored on a wild pitch from Mustang starting pitcher Sierra Hyland in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cal Poly would fail to score a run in the top of the seventh.

A second game was scheduled for Saturday, but it has been moved to Sunday as a result of an extended rain delay. The Mustangs (22-25, 5-8 Big West Conference) will look to get back on track when they start their doubleheader against the Titans (28-20, 6-7) at 11 am on Sunday.
