Houston stays perfect in road win over Tulsa

The Cougars powered past the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricanes after yet another strong performance from junior quarterback Greg Ward, Jr.

The Golden Hurricanes took the opening kickoff and drove deep into Cougar territory before settling for a field goal.

Ward, Jr. combined for 460 yards on the day, recording three touchdowns on the ground, and had 182 yards rushing on 20 attempts, for an average of 9.1 yards per carry.

Senior running back Kenneth Farrow had 159 yards on 19 carries and two scores, as the Cougars displayed absolutely dominance on the ground.

The defense played a strong game, as they held a potent Tulsa offense to just 24 points, while also converting two interceptions.

Junior linebacker Steven Taylor had a fantastic game on defense, collecting 16 total tackles and four tackles for loss, including three sacks.

Houston responded with a score of their own, capping off a nine-play drive with a touchdown to take the lead back from Tulsa.

The two teams traded possession back and forth for a while until Tulsa scored their first touchdown of the game, putting the Hurricanes up 10-7.

Tulsa carried that lead into the second quarter, but Ward, Jr. added his second and third rushing touchdown of the day, including one just 15 seconds before half time, to give UH the 21-10 lead heading into the break.

Following halftime, both teams played to a standstill for a bit until senior kicker Kyle Bullard netted a 21-yard field goal, putting the Cougars up 14 points.

Tulsa responded with another touchdown, closing the gap to just seven points, and looked like they had recaptured the momentum, but a pair of touchdowns from Farrow, putting the Cougars up 21 points.

The Golden Hurricanes added one more score with 1:20 left in the game, but the Cougars ran out the clock on the ensuing drive and took the 38-24 win on the road.

With the win, the Cougars remain perfect sitting at 4-0 and 1-0 in the American Athletic Conference.

Houston takes on the Southern Methodist University Mustangs on a short turnaround Thursday at 7 p.m. at TDECU Stadium.
