The Charlotte 49ers welcome the second half of the Conference USA schedule with a weekend trip to Old Dominion. In the 49ers last outing with the Lady Monarchs on Jan. 3, Charlotte suffered defeat, 71-59. Head coach Cara Consuegra wasn’t pleased with her team’s performance just over a month ago and this second matchup presents Charlotte with an opportunity to rectify their mistakes made in the first meeting. Tip-off between the two C-USA schools is set for Saturday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m.

DAZZLING DUO

Whenever a team receives a second chance and an opportunity for redemption, it’s important to have leaders within the squad. Luckily, for the 49ers, senior Alexis Alexander is coming off one of her best performances in a Charlotte jersey while Kira Gordon experienced a proficient performance from the field in their last outing with Old Dominion. The senior duo will hold crucial roles in Charlotte’s showdown with the Lady Monarchs as the former will be responsible for controlling the painted area while Gordon will likely pull a few of Old Dominion’s taller defenders away from the basket.

Gordon is also on the verge of joining Charlotte’s 1,000 point club which could come sooner rather than later for the senior. 19 points against the Lady Monarchs will tab her as the 21st player in school history to reach the coveted feat and might just be enough to lead Charlotte to their 13th victory.

OLD DOMINION SCOUTING REPORT

“Everyone knows about Jennie Simms,” head coach Cara Consuegra said.

Since the 49ers saw her last, Jennie Simms etched her name into Old Dominion’s history books becoming just the sixth player to reach the 1,000 point mark in two years. It’s an impressive feat considering she’s accomplished such in a short period of time but it also illustrates just how important she is to the program. This season, the Lady Monarchs hold a (9-12, 5-4) record with Simms averaging just under 20 points per game. In Old Dominion’s last outing with Charlotte, Lefty Webster held the responsibilities of limiting Simms production which she accomplished to an extent. Simms scored 18 points on 18 shots and only brought down 5 rebounds. If Simms experiences a similar type of shooting night, the evolved defensive-minded 49ers should feel confident in returning to the Queen City with a victory.
