Many UCLA fraternities will have one year to ban hard liquor from their events and houses due to a national ban passed at this year’s North-American Interfraternity Conference.

The ban requires fraternities such as Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Theta Pi and Delta Lambda Phi to prohibit drinks with an alcohol content over 15 percent by Sept. 1, 2019, unless the drinks are served by a licensed third-party vendor.

Members of the NIC, a national trade association for 66 fraternities, overwhelmingly voted to impose this ban, after two alcohol-related deaths at fraternities in the organization received national publicity this year. More than 6,000 chapters on 800 campuses will be affected by this ban.
