The Big 12 conference named Darrell Stuckey Big 12 Sportsman of the Year Thursday, honoring his performance on and off the field.

Hollie Vise, a gymnast from Oklahoma, won the women’s honor.

Started in 2000-01, the Sportspersons of the Year Award recognizes students every year on sportsmanship in athletics, commitment to community and excellence in academics. The winners are selected by a media panel and are then nominated for the NCAA Sportsmanship Award.

Stuckey is the third Jayhawk to earn the Big 12 award. The Previous Kansas winners include women’s golfer Amanda Costner in 2007 and volleyball player Katie Martincich in 2008.

Stuckey, a fourth round selection by the San Diego Chargers in the 2010 NFL Draft, finished his Jayhawk career as the second-leading tackler among defensive backs with 295.

He was an active participant in community service while serving on athletic and campus committees and visiting elementary schools.
