University police and Fayetteville fire officials are investigating a suspicious explosion and fire at the Phi Gamma Delta, or FIJI, fraternity house that occurred at about 3:45 Saturday morning. No suspects have been identified.
Police have not ruled out foul play, because the fire started while the house was vacant, said Lt. Matt Mills, of UAPD. An explosion shattered more than 20 windows and caused a large section of brick facade to spill into the parking lot.
Because the investigation is ongoing, police officials cannot release any details related to the fire, Mills said. The department is expecting an official damage report by the end of the week.
The FIJI house was already scheduled to undergo renovations beginning this fall.
Also known as the Garland House, the FIJI house is located at 10 N. Garland Street, across from Pomfret Hall.
