Officers were dispatched to the area of Hartig Drug on Sunday after receiving reports of a fight in progress involving 20 subjects.
Jerrard Cooney, 23, of Coralville was charged with possession of a controlled substance after Iowa City police found him in the area of the brawl. When Cooney saw officers, he quickly put his hands in his pockets and walked away, according to police.
He allegedly denied knowing anything about the fight. When officers asked him if he had any weapons or illegal items on him, he started looking around as if he was going to run, reports said.
When officers began to pat Cooney down, he quickly turned away, so officers handcuffed him.
During the pat-down, officers allegedly found a bag of marijuana in Cooney’s front pocket.
Possession of a controlled substance is a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of no more than a $1,500.
