U. Nevada student killed in accident near Pyramid Lake

A U. Nevada-Reno student was killed in a car accident Monday near Pyramid Lake when the Jeep Wrangler he was in overturned, police said.

Matt Trabert, a 20-year-old business major and a member Sigma Nu fraternity, was found trapped under the vehicle by authorities and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police determined that Trabert was the only person in the vehicle not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

According to a press release from the Washoe County Sherriff’s Office, Kyle Davenport, 22 years old of Sparks was the driver of the vehicle. He was arrested after submitting to an alcohol test for Felony Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Causing Death. Davenport, along with a third passenger, Morgan Brody, 22 years old of Reno, was treated at the scene. Davenport was booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility with a bail set at $30,000.

Casey Stiteler, a member of Sigma Nu, said a memorial service has been planned for Trabert, open to anyone, to be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Sigma Nu house. The fraternity is also considering holding a candlelight vigil for Trabert before the first day of classes, but the event is tentative.

Stiteler described Trabert as being “heavily involved in Sigma Nu,” as well as “a huge Wolf Pack fan” who traveled to see games and a “relentlessly happy person.”

“He was always happy and always wanted to make sure everyone else was happy,” Stiteler said.

Deputy Armando Avina, a Public Information Officer in the Washoe County Sherriff’s Office, said the road that the three were traveling on was a narrow road with a downward slope to the right. The vehicle overturned when it hit a rock on the left side of the road, which had a “ramping effect,” he said.

Police were dispatched to the scene near Sutcliffe at about 4 a.m. after the accident was reported by one of the people involved in it, Avina said.
