Column: Renting clothes online

By Keiara Carr

Let’s be honest, we are a generation that refuses to be inconvenienced.

I live in a world where I am allowed to buy books, order food and earn a degree without getting out of my bed.  Yet, the one question that I can never seem to Google myself out of is what do I wear?

A website called, renttherunway.com, now has all the answers. Once signed up, women can shop and rent dresses from designer names including Halston Heritage and Proenza Schouler.

Or even better, you can shop by occasion, which spans from “clubbing dresses” to “this-is-getting-serious-date dresses” with all the other neurotic reasoning we give ourselves to buy a new outfit in between. The clothing rental fee can be as low as $35 or as high as $350. Depending on the dress, you can keep it from four to eight days.

Once you find your dress, you have the option of also renting accessories, which start at $10, to match your outfit.  You also get a free backup dress that is one size bigger, just in case you forgot about your Ben and Jerry’s binge that went horribly wrong.

You are responsible for picking a delivery date and then repackaging and returning the items once you are finished wearing them. The company takes care of the dry cleaning.

I found a one-shoulder mint, Grecian Mark & James by Badgley Mischka dress with a retail price of $360 that I could rent for $35 for my upcoming birthday party. And to think, our parents were satisfied when cell phones stopped looking like gray bricks with 5-inch antennas.

Even if it’s for one night only, every girl should be able to look fabulous without  having to decide whether she really needs to eat food for the next week.

That is exactly what this is column is about. Fashion shouldn’t be a luxury, because it’s how we define ourselves and that speaks volumes to people every day. The way we feel about ourselves should not be negotiated because of a price tag. That’s just plain inconvenient.
