A Penn State student died after suffering a seizure Tuesday morning during a Leadership Jumpstart (LJS) retreat to Camp Blue Diamond, according to a message from Schreyer Honors College Dean Christian Brady.

Tom Richards, 19, was returning to the LJS program with this year’s class of new students as a Teaching Assistant, after participating in the class in 2009 as an incoming freshman. Richards was attending the retreat at Camp Blue Diamond in Petersburgh, Pa., as a leader, Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said.

He was about to begin his sophomore year at Penn State, studying political science and history and participating in the Penn State Mock Trial Club and the Liberal Arts Undergraduate Council. Richards was also a Schreyer Scholar and a member of the Presidential Leadership Academy’s incoming sophomore class.

A message regarding Richard’s death was sent out to members of the Schreyer Honors College and the Presidential Leadership Academy this morning, in which Brady extended his sympathies to the student’s friends and family for their loss.

No funeral arrangements have been finalized at this time, according to the message.
