Oklahoma blows out Iowa State, sets new school records

By Clark Foy

The Oklahoma Sooners came out rolling Saturday evening and didn’t look back as they routed the Iowa State Cyclones 52-0 in Norman.

Despite sitting at 5-0 before the win over ISU, the Sooners faced a lot of scrutiny because of their shaky play in the second half. Utah State, Air Force, Cincinnati and Texas all came within eight points of downing the Sooners thanks to second half droughts that have plagued OU this season season.

Not so on Saturday.

The Sooners put together four complete quarters and broke several school records in the homecoming blowout win.

Senior running back DeMarco Murray broke OU’s all-time career touchdown record of 57 that was set by Steve Owens, the Sooners’ first Heisman winner. Murray had three touchdowns on the day and 140 all-purpose yards. His third touchdown gave him 58 all-purpose scores for his career.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Landry Jones also broke a record with one of his strongest outings as a Sooner: 334 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers. His 88.2 completion percentage (30-of-34) is the highest ever of an OU quarterback who threw 25 or more passes in a game. Jones completed his first 12 passes of the game.

Junior wide receiver Ryan Broyles broke his own single-game reception record with 15 catches. Broyles had 13 receptions in the first half, enough to tie his former single-game record from the Sun Bowl last season. Broyles finished with 182 yards and one touchdown.

The Sooners racked up 672 total yards of offense and held the Cyclones to 181 yards — an average of three yards per play. The shutout was OU’s first downing the Oklahoma State Cowboys 27-0 in Norman at the end of the regular season last year.

Next week the Sooners face the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Mo. Earlier Saturday, the Tigers went to Texas A&M and humbled the Aggies 30-9. Kickoff has been officially set for 7 p.m. on ABC.
