By Lukas Eggen

No. 19 Nevada fell to Hawaii 27-21 Saturday night. The Wolf Pack was shut out in the first half for the first time this season, as Hawaii built a 17-0 lead into the third quarter. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick struggled, missing multiple receivers high and behind and throwing one interception in the first half.

Nevada opened the second half driving down the field and ending in what appeared to be a touchdown run by Kaepernick. However, after review, it was ruled a fumble into the end zone.

The Wolf Pack pulled to within 20-14 thanks to touchdowns from running back Vai Taua and a quarterback sneak by Kaepernick. Hawaii responded with a touchdown of its own to go ahead 27-14 with about six minutes remaining in the game.

Nevada pulled to within 27-21 after Kaepernick hit running back Mike Ball for a touchdown with just more than three minutes remaining. The Wolf Pack converted an onside kick to get the ball back. However, Kaepernick threw his second interception of the game off a tipped pass and the Warriors ran out the clock.

The Wolf Pack has a bye next week. The team’s next game is Oct. 30, when Nevada hosts Utah State for its Hall of Fame game.

Notes:

Running back Vai Taua had his left ankle taped in the second half. He was replaced by Ball in the fourth quarter.

Nevada failed to score on its first drive for the first time this season.

The Wolf Pack hasn’t beaten Hawaii at Hawaii since 1948.
