Tom and Meredith Brokaw have pledged $100,000 for a scholarship program at U. South Dakota.
USD officials say Tom and Meredith Brokaw Scholarship recipients must be graduates of a South Dakota high school who are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences or the School of Education.
Winners will need to demonstrate the personal characteristics of duty, sacrifice, achievements and honor like the many heroes described in Tom Brokaw’s book, “The Greatest Generation.”
The gift provides $50,000 per year for the next two years for recipients. Scholars may be eligible for a subsequent award.
The veteran NBC newsman and his wife both graduated from USD in the 1960s. Tom Brokaw was recently on the USD campus during Dakota Days, presenting the lecture, “Uncle Sam Needs Us,” and he also filmed a segment for NBC’s “Today” show honoring the legacy of former USD faculty member William O. “Doc” Farber.
