Adam Robinson cited for possession of marijuana

Iowa sophomore running back Adam Robinson was arrested for possession of marijuana Monday night in Des Moines.

Robinson — who was suspended for tonight’s Insight Bowl in Arizona by head coach Kirk Ferentz for unspecified reasons — was cited for possession around 10:45 p.m. after a routine traffic stop.

An Iowa State Patrol trooper detected a strong odor of marijuana from the vehicle, which was being driven by Ermin Zornic, 20.

Robinson, 21, was a passenger in the car. He was cited and released on his own recognizance, while Zornic was arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana and OWI. Zornic was taken to Polk County Jail.

Robinson has been Iowa’s leading rusher each of the last two seasons. He set an Iowa freshman mark with 834 yards in 2009, and compiled 941 yards and 10 touchdowns this year. The sophomore was benched for the first quarter of Iowa’s matchup against Ohio State for what Ferentz called “academic indigestion.” And in a Dec. 14 press conference, Ferentz said Robinson’s resulted in the running back not “learning fast enough” from that mistake.

At the time, Ferentz said it would be up to Robinson whether he returned to the team in January, adding, “My anticipation is he’ll be back here in January.”

Robinson’s citation comes just three weeks after wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos was charged with seven drug-related counts in Johnson County Court. Johnson-Koulianos was dismissed from the team shortly thereafter. If Ferentz decided to do the same with Robinson, Iowa would have one experienced running back left on its roster for next season, true freshman Marcus Coker.

Associate sports information director Steve Roe said Ferentz wouldn’t have a comment on Robinson before Tuesday’s Insight Bowl, but he expected Athletics Director Gary Barta to release a statement Tuesday afternoon.
