LSU coach Les Miles addresses bar incident

LSU coach Les Miles said he hasn’t made any suspensions stemming from an incident early Friday morning at Shady’s Bar involving the football team.

Miles spoke to the media Saturday and said he will continue his own investigation into the altercation. He said he will wait to take action until he learns more.

“At the appropriate time we’ll take very strong action,” Miles said.

Miles called the incident a “team violation,” involving a “relatively large group” including quarterback Jordan Jefferson and offensive lineman T-Bob Hebert, but did not know the exact number of players involved.

Miles said he, his players and his coaching staff will continue to cooperate with ongoing police investigations.

“As miserable as I am about this, and as disappointed and as mad, I recognize that I’ve got a good group of men who understand the mistakes that were made,” Miles said. “I suspect they will make the appropriate changes. I will instruct them along those lines, I promise.”

The Unity Council, a group of team leaders from each position, also appeared in front of the media. Offensive lineman Josh Dworaczyk spoke on behalf of the players.

“I want to start off by apologizing for the team and its actions,” Dworaczyk said. “Our apologies extend to Coach Miles and the coaching staff, to the community, to the fans, to our alumni. From this point forward we’re going to continue to change our direction and do what we do as a football team together as a group of guys. We’re here gathered as a Unity Council as leaders, to lead this team and that is what we will do.”

Jefferson and a group of football players were involved in an altercation at Shady’s between 1:30 and 2 a.m. No arrests have been made, but the police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Joe Alleva, LSU vice chancellor and director of athletics, released a statement shortly after Miles spoke. He said determining the facts surrounding the incident is critical.

“We will not tolerate student-athletes whose irresponsible actions tarnish the good name of a great university,” Alleva said. “LSU student-athletes are expected to behave with the understanding that they represent their school, their fellow students and the long history of this program, regardless of the time of day.”
