Oklahoma State dominates Texas Tech in 66-6 blowout

By Anthony Slater

The West Texas wind was howling. Thirty mile per hour gusts blew debris all over Jones AT&T Stadium.

It was the kind of weather that causes teams to abandon the pass. Or, at least, tweak the playcalling.

But not Oklahoma State. Not with strong-armed quarterback Brandon Weeden. And not with the rhythm he had during the Cowboys 66-6 win at Texas Tech on Saturday.

“(Weeden) is a strong human being with a strong arm,” coach Mike Gundy said. “He spins it, and when he spins it, it cuts through (the wind) pretty good.”

And, like nearly every OSU game this season, that explosive attack was on display early. In their last six games, the Cowboys have outscored opponents 111-20 in the first quarter.

It’s a simple formula: get out early and cruise. And one the Cowboys used again on Saturday, taking a 21-0 lead 13 minutes into the game.

“When you got good players, and you got a good quarterback, you should start fast,” offensive coordinator Todd Monken said. “It’s always nice to get that early start.”

The first score came on a Weeden to Justin Blackmon fade route. This pass play that has quickly become one of the most unstoppable in all of college football.

That was quickly followed by a two-yard Joseph Randle touchdown. And what else is new. The sophomore back has 14 touchdowns in the last four games and 23 on the season.

Shortly thereafter, freshman wide receiver Josh Stewart took a Weeden strike in from 27-yards out for the first score of college career. But it wouldn’t be his last. Stewart finished the day with three touchdowns.

“(Stewart) is a rep guy, and I think he has taken a more serious approach,” Monken said. “He’s finally settled into school, and that there are girls around him, and he does have to go to class…He’s a good football player who will continue to get better.”

From there, the Cowboys breezed through the Lubbock wind. Anderson touchdown. Tech botches a kickoff, Stewart touchdown. Randle into the endzone two more times and a 49-0 halftime lead.

“It was just a good game, I don’t really know what else to say,” Gundy said. “The guys just played really well. I’m happy with all of them when I look down at the stats.”

That includes Weeden’s statline, as the senior quarterback used the second half as a chance to pad his passing numbers and boost his Heisman resume. He ended the day 31 of 37 for 423 yards and five touchdowns.

That included a 55-yard strike to Blackmon in the third quarter, adding another highlight reel play for the prolific tandem.

“(The big win) feels good, especially after the game last week where it was kind of a nail biter until the end,” Weeden said.

The only blemish during this blowout – a Red Raider 37-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Other than that, the Cowboy defense blanked a potent Tech passing attack.

“Our defense is not what people think or talk about,” Randle said. “I respect our defense because of when we go up against them in summer and in camp.”

But it’s long past that time. It’s creeping toward mid-November. The defense is making the plays, the offense is dropping 50+ with regularity and the Cowboys are yet to lose.

Sixty minutes away from Bedlam for a shot at the title.

“There is pressure,” Gundy said. “I don’t think there is any question that each week you know you can just feel it…I would much rather have this pressure than sitting around and having a tough season and trying to find a way to win enough games to keep your head above water.”
