Second Mile CEO steps down from charity amidst Penn State scandal

By Anna Orso

Jack Raykovitz, president and CEO of The Second Mile, has stepped down, according to a press release.

In the wake of allegations against the founder of the charity, Jerry Sandusky, the Board of Directors accepted Raykovitz’s resignation on Sunday.

Sandusky met all the boys he sexually abused through The Second Mile program —a non-profit organization that caters to under-privileged children — according to the grand jury presentment.

“I hope that my resignation brings with it the beginning of that restoration of faith in the community of volunteers and staff that, along with the children and families we serve, are The Second Mile,” Raykovitz said in a statement.

Raykovitz has served as the CEO of The Second Mile for 28 years and will now be replaced by David Woodle, the current vice chairman of the Board of Directors, who will now be responsible for the day-to-day operations of The Second Mile.

In the press release issued by The Second Mile, the charity vowed to conduct its own internal investigation to assess policies and operations. The findings of the investigation should be publicized by the end of December, according to the release.

In addition, The Second Mile has hired new counsel to represent them — the law firm of Archer and Greiner, a regional law firm out of Philadelphia.
The Second Mile’s former counsel, Wendell Courtney, resigned from his position with the charity last week.

Courtney served as general counsel for Penn State when Sandusky was being investigated in 1998 for allegedly sexually abusing a young boy, according to the grand jury presentment.

No charges were brought against Sandusky after that investigation.

Woodle said in a statement that The Second Mile will continue to work with the Attorney General’s office as the ongoing investigation continues. He urged anyone with additional information to come forward and contact investigators.
