Penn State gets commitment from nation’s top tight end recruit

First-year Penn State head football coach Bill O’Brien continued his success with the 2013 recruiting class Friday.

Five-star tight end prospect Adam Breneman verbally committed to the Nittany Lions during a press conference in his high school gymnasium in Camp Hill, Pa. Breneman is ranked as the top tight end in his recruiting class by Scout.com, and he also was considering Ohio State, Notre Dame and Maryland.

Friends, family and media members packed one side of the Cedar Cliff High School gym to see the tight end make his decision.

Following a lengthy introduction by Cedar Cliff coach Jim Cantafio, who talked about the recruiting process, Breneman took the microphone and made his decision shortly after.

The 6-foot-5 tight end said he was going to school just two hours away, which provoked cheers from the crowd as he put a Penn State hat on his head.

As a junior, Breneman caught 72 passes for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns, according to Scout.com. He caught 60 balls for 863 yards and eight touchdowns during his sophomore campaign.

Breneman had narrowed his choices down to Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Maryland, but he received offers from more than 20 universities.

The tight end joins an already strong 2013 Penn State recruiting class. O’Brien has received verbal commitments from four-star quarterback Christian Hackenberg, four-star linebacker/defensive end Garrett Sickels and four-star athlete Ross Douglas.
