On Thursday evening, President Barack Obama’s campaign released its documentary on the past three years of his presidency.
Though the just shy of 17-minute video showed some of Obama’s accomplishments since taking office in 2009. Produced by Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim and narrated by actor Tom Hanks, the movie starts out by asking the viewer “what do we remember about 2008?”
Taking a look back, 2008 was the last election year, as well as the official collapse of the U.S. economy. The economy has been one of the major themes of Obama’s term as president, thus far.
The short campaign film documents Obama’s time in office by the main topics that made headlines. The movie includes commentary from various former staff members and a former president as well.
Austan Goolsbee, the former chairman of economic advisors, sets the scene of a snowy Chicago day when economic experts came into town for a meeting on what lay ahead.
The movie captures some of the things he has said in speeches, including his inauguration speech in January 2009.
“Starting today, we must begin again of the work of remaking,” he said.
The movie doesn’t directly bash any of the current Republican presidential candidates.
The movie does highlight the five big headlines of his presidency: the economic crisis, health care reform, the killing of Osama bin Laden, the return of troops and other initiatives.
Former President Bill Clinton praised Obama’s decision to attack the compound where bin Laden was hiding.
“He took the harder and more honorable path. When I saw what had happened, I thought to myself, I hope that is the call I would have made,” said Clinton.
The ending of the movie circles back to the beginning, challenging the viewer to remember what Obama has done since 2008.
