Oklahoma sophomore offensive lineman Austin Woods now has bigger things to worry about than blocking assignments and preseason workouts. Woods, a 2011 Academic All-Big 12 selection, is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of lymph tissue.

Woods made the news official via comments on his twitter Monday. He seems to be approaching the battle with the same mentality that got him a scholarship with one of the top football programs in the nation — just keep fighting.

“Fighter’s mentality. Round 1…,” Woods tweeted Monday morning.

Later Monday evening, he tweeted he found out last Thursday he has stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that he is receiving treatment at OU’s Stephenson Cancer Center.

The Rockwall, Texas, native also posted a thank you to all of his supporters.

“Thank you everyone for all the support! #beatcancer,” he tweeted.

Woods has spent the last two years at OU as the deep snapper on placekicks. He also saw time on the offensive line in four games last season.

This year, Woods is slated to be the backup center behind starter Ben Habern. While the diagnosis is definitely a blow to the Sooners, Woods’ prognosis looks encouraging.

The survival rate for those who suffer from the disease is well over 80 percent. So, with the correct treatment, the chances of Woods making a full recovery are very high.
