Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he is pleased with Tuesday’s announcement of a four-team college football playoff starting in 2014.
He said he is excited for the opportunity for the best teams in the country to compete for the national championship.
“We are allowing the best teams in the country to determine a national champion on the football field, and as a coach, that’s what you want,” Stoops said in a release. “Our student-athletes, our universities, college football and the fans are all winners in this new playoff format.”
Stoops has long been an advocate of the bowl system, citing it as a unique and unforgettable experience for his and all players. He said the new system will leave that experience intact.
“I’m very pleased that student-athletes competing for a national championship will still get to enjoy the rich part of college football’s tradition that is that week-long bowl experience,” Stoops said in a release. “To me, this decision further enhances the importance of our regular-season games and is good for college football and our student-athletes all the way around.”
