Marley Schwartz doesn’t need a studio. Instead, the University of Oregon freshman can produce his music from the comfort of his bedroom.
“Any day when I get home, I can sit down at my computer, and it’s awesome because I can either get on Facebook or make a song,” Schwartz said. “It’s that easy.”
Like a growing number of musicians in recent years, he produces his own electronic music on his computer using minimal equipment. He has been producing music since he was a freshman in high school, and in the last year, he has been playing his music at shows around Oregon under the disc jockey name “TF Marz.”
Schwartz has been playing shows since his junior year of high school, when he DJed at a high school dance. Since then, he has played shows for the Ashland-based snowboard company ædion, in addition to art shows in Portland and Mt. Ashland Rail Jam earlier this month. His experiences with DJing and his music production have driven him to pursue a career in the music industry.
“It’s the thing I love — to know I’m about to play some music that will get everyone excited and dancing,” he said. “You’re causing people to have such a good time. When you’re playing your own music and people are digging it, it’s the coolest thing.”
Schwartz’s choices as a DJ are heavily influenced by the wide variety of artists he listens to. His idols range from Marvin Gaye to Kanye West, and his work as a DJ has allowed him to mesh his varied musical interests.
“I like to mix it all in and mash it up and have people listen to it in a new way,” he said.
Although he knows that music production is not an easy field to break into, he has no doubt that it is what he wants to do.
“I know what I want to do is an endeavor,” he said. “There’s a lot of people out there who want to do it. But I’ll never forget what my dad’s friend in the music business said: ‘If you want to be in the music business, don’t have a plan b because you’ll use it.’ It’s that sense that you need to have full confidence that you can do it.”
