The Hartford Hawks (14-12) would start their two-game road trip off by playing the Maine Blackbears (10-15) on Wednesday , Feb. 13 at the Alford Arena.

Hartford hadn’t lost a game in February going on a three game winning streak.

The Hawks would get off to a quick 10-5 lead in the first 4:30 of play, but the Blackbears would take the lead back on a 7-0 run.

The game would go back and forth with neither team taking a bigger lead than five.

Hartford’s Oren Faulk scored five straight points to help secure the lead, which was then capped off on a three-ball by Corban Wroe with two seconds left on the clock.

The Hawks would take the lead by four at half, 34-30.  In the second half, the game started slow with Hartford striking first to increase their lead to six.

Maine wasn’t out of it yet starting up another 7-0 run to take the lead by one with 14:32 to play.

The game stayed tied on five occasions until the Blackbears went on a 7-2 run to go up with less than a minute to play.

After a Hartford timeout, Wes Cole would check into the game and hit two clutch three’s to tie the game at 64 with 27 seconds in the game.

It looked like the game would probably head into overtime after Maine’s Justin Edwards missed a shot from behind the arc; Alasdair Fraser would get the rebound and miss, but Edwards would follow that shot by tipping it in with less than a second to play.

The final score would be in favor of Maine 66-64 in stunning fashion, snapping the Hawks three-game winning streak, while Maine receives its 10 win of the season.

Maine out-rebounded Hartford 32-21, even though the Hawks outscored them off the bench 24-15.

The Hawks also shot 50 percent from beyond the three-point line, hitting 10 in the game.

Hartford was led by Mark Nwakamma, scoring 17 points adding eight rebounds and Yolonzo Moore II scored 14 points of his own.

Leading Maine was Justin Edwards, who scored 18 points and eight rebounds, while Zarko Valjarevic had 17 points in the win.

Almost 3,000 were in attendance to watch the Hawks next take on the Albany Great Danes (20-8) on Saturday in Albany, NY.

After the tough loss to Maine a couple days earlier, the Hawks would try to get back in the win column against an Albany team that also lost to Maine in their last game.

The Great Danes got off to a strong start leading the Hawks 16-5 after just five minutes of play.

Hartford would slowly chip away at Albany’s lead cutting it to three after a layup by  Wroe.

The Great Danes were not rattled though and exploded offensively in route to a 19-1 run capped off by a jumper by Jayson Guerrier with 2:21 left in the first half.

Albany would lead by 20 at half with a score of 40-20.

The Hawks would start off the second half with a quick three-ball by John Peterson hoping to begin a huge comeback.

At the 16:47 mark, Hartford would cut the deficit to 15 after a three by Mark Nwakamma, but soon later the Great Danes would answer back with a three of their own.

Albany did a great job of controlling their lead and keeping Hartford 19 to 22 points behind over the next six minutes of play.

From there it would only get worse for the Hawks as the Great Danes extended their lead to 29 with 1:55 left in the game.

Albany would run away with a comfortable 75-49 victory improving their record to 19-8, while the Hawks drop their second game in a row.

Albany’s bench was a big help scoring 23 points compared to Hartford’s 11.

The Hawks also had issues from the field shooting 17 of 54 overall, including seven of 32 from three-point range, while Albany shot an excellent 26 of 47 from the field including 10 of 16 from beyond the three-point line.

Leading Hartford was Mark Nwakamma with 12 points, all of which were scored in the second half and Nate Sikma with 10 points.

Albany’s scoring leaders were Jacob Iati, who scored 18 points with four threes to go along with four steals and Mike Black scored 14 points to help in the win.

After a rough road trip, the Hawks will travel back home on Wednesday to face the New Hampshire Wildcats.

Tipoff will begin in the Chase Arena at 7 p.m. as each game to close the season is crucial.
