The Charlotte 49ers have dismissed DeMario Mayfield from the team after violating athletic department policy. Mayfield was suspended on Jan. 30.

Mayfield moved into the starting lineup in the win against Xavier and had been averaging a team-high 11.7 points with 3.6 rebounds.

The junior from Royston, Ga., had recorded 14 double-figure scoring games this season and 33 during his career. Mayfield was a transfer from the University of Georgia. He was also the first newcomer to be added to the 49ers’ roster by head coach Alan Major.

Mayfield had been suspended three times, including a two-game suspension to start this season for violating team rules.

In a statement released announcing his indefinite suspension in January, athletic director Judy Rose said, “Our policies are in place for a reason and our student-athletes are expected to abide by them.”

“The coaching staff wants to wish DeMario the best in his future endeavors,” said Major. “We will continue to move forward as a team.”

Charlotte will host Temple at Halton Arena on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
