The McDonald Theatre was filled to capacity Saturday night for the 1320 Records front men Sound Tribe Sector 9 and their newest label pick up, Russ Liquid. STS9 returned to Eugene for the first time since 2009 for the third show of their 2013 winter west coast tour. Eugene was presented with the group’s visual display from their “Great Cycle Spectacles” tour, featuring graphics and lighting design by Saxton Waller.
To open the night, Russ Liquid performed his forward-thinking interpretation of modern bass music. It felt like a tribal affair, which is fitting considering the headliner’s name. While the crowd was still a bit scarce for the majority of the opening set, people were in full-blown primal dance mode. And by the time the Russ Liquid was getting through his last few tracks, the venue grew livelier by the minute with eager fans awaiting the headlining act.
Once the crowd thickened and Sound Tribe took to the stage, any remaining attendees rushed in to the theater. The group plunged into their opening track, “Vapors.” After getting through the first set, the crowd was given an intermission to take a breather, grab a drink or just get a bit more familiar with each other. Following intermission, STS9 took to the stage for their final set performing a beautiful and funk-infused rendition of “When The Dust Settles.” Later they broke into a cover of Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock” with more energy and vigor than the original French duo’s 2005 version. Finally, for their encore performance, STS9 performed an uplifting version of “EHM” that satisfied some fans and displeased other, more seasoned STS9 fans.
On the whole, the McDonald Theatre hosted one of the livelier Eugene performances of 2013 thus far with a diverse crowd to match of both new and seasoned fans alike sharing the dance floor. In all, the show was performed and hosted to much praise by those in attendance.
