The Campus Activities Team, CAT, made the announcement that rapper, Fabolous, will be the first performer for the Saturday night concert for Spring Fling this year, last Thursday, Feb. 14th.
Towards the end of last semester, CAT sent out a survey to students on who they wanted to perform at Spring Fling. The options were 2 Chainz, Mac Miller, Reel Big Fish, Motion City Soundtrack, Macklemore and 3OH!3.
Much to the dismay of students, 2Chainz and Mac Miller were not announced to perform at Spring Fling. While some students have hope that one of the two will be announced as the second performer, neither of the artists will be performing due to not being available at the time.
“ The number one choice for students was 2Chainz but he was not available. The number two choice was Mac Miller, again he was not available,” said Angela Bethoney, concert and comedy coordinator for CAT. “They were both in our budget and we gave offers to them, but they couldn’t do it.”
While students are upset with the choice of Fabolous, he was ranked third on the survey. CAT this year went by the order that was ranked by the students when choosing who to perform for Spring Fling.
“There was a list of potential combinations and a list of them separately, and then after that we get the results and see who the campus really likes and we will start at the top and go down the list.”
Macklemore, who came out with the popular song, “Thrift Shop,” in October of 2012, was ranked last on the student survey. Due to being ranked last, he was not contacted to perform.
“Macklemore was at the bottom of the list because nobody knew him. I went strictly by the list that the students gave me so when Macklemore was at the bottom, I didn’t look at him because he had the least amount of votes on the survey,” said Bethoney.
Bethoney would go on to say though that the artist who was ranked after Fabolous had accepted the offer to perform, however CAT was waiting for the final confirmation and for the contract to be sent in.
Due to the process of elimination, that leaves either Reel Big Fish, Motion City Soundtrack or 3OH!3 to perform at Spring Fling.
Rumors have circulated from students and various organizations that 3OH!3, the electro pop duo from Boulder, Colorado, will be the final performer at Spring Fling. Those rumors though have not been confirmed.
A band confirmed to play at Spring Fling is Lady Hips, who won the Battle of the Bands competition last year during Spring Fling.
Last year, CAT hosted a concert Friday night in the gym for Ludacris and Wale. This year, CAT decided to go back to the traditional Saturday night concert.
“We don’t want to make a huge concert Friday night and a concert on Saturday. We feel everything should be outside and students shouldn’t have to pay to see the main act. We want everyone to have a good time Saturday night,” Bethoney stated.
As usual, CAT will be hosting other events during Spring Fling. These include a talent show Thursday night, a Spring Fling party hosted in GSU Friday night, and lawn activities Saturday afternoon from 2 to 6 p.m.
