PostSecret author speaks at McKnight Hall

This evening, Author and creator of ‘PostSecret’ Frank Warren, will be speaking to students in Mcknight Hall at 7:00 p.m.

If you have been in the student union this past school year, you may have seen a spin on the idea of PostSecret. Essentially, students post their deepest secrets, desires or fears on a notecard anonymously.

The idea originated in November 2004 when Warren came up with an art project. He decided to distribute 3,000 postcards instructing people to tell their secret anonymously. Upon completion of the project, Warren displayed the secrets and received exceptional feedback. Soon an epidemic was created in which Warren received thousands of secrets a day prompting him to create a blogosphere. The project was now bigger than Warren had imagined.

The posts brought about more inspirational messages than Warren had expected thanking him for creating such a movement. According to the WashingtonPost, one resident in Miami, Florida said “I can’t thank you enough for this outlet and for keeping it so vibrant and available.” It is messages like this that has sprouted such blistering growth.

Some of the most famous post’s has not only helped those who have shared their past but also those who have read them. Here are a few:

“I lost my virginity to a taxi driver.”

“I am a survivor of suicide, and I am grateful to be alive today.”

“I learned more about God in my college global studies class than in bible study.”

“Even though you raped me, I still consider myself a virgin.”

The last post above is one of many that has sparked controversy. Many readers have asked the question, “are some of these false statements?” Warren responded in the same interview with WashingtonPost, ” I received one email that said even if the secret is not true for the person mailing it, it might be real for dozens of others who read it.”

The movement will not be ending anytime soon and if you are free tonight, this inspiring shift of virtual reality will give you more insight on the story behind PostSecret with the creator himself.
