International program expands to include housing in Greek Village

The Global Gateway Program, an expansion of the International Housing floor located in Witherspoon Hall, will give upperclass female students an opportunity to live in international-themed housing in Greek Village House 6.

This will be the first independent international housing option on UNC Charlotte’s campus opening fall 2013.

“The discussions to have a freestanding international house has been had in Office of International Programs for years,” said

Maureen White, coordinator of International Initiates at the Office of International Programs.

“This is an exciting opportunity to have a space on campus to provide programming for residence of the Global Gateways House and others on campus.”

The Witherspoon International Floor has been a partnership between the Department of Housing and Residence Life and the Office of International Programs for almost 15 years.

The International Floor will still be an option for both male and female domestic and international students.

“The ways that we hope to impact students’ experience on campus is to enrich and to develop new and exciting partnerships for the membership in Witherspoon International Floor and as well as the Gateway House and students across campus,” said White.

According to White, planning has been based on finalizing the applications for the Global Gateways house. Once the student Resident Assistants have been selected by Housing and Residence Life, they will begin to work on the programming schedule.

“I envision programming such as lectures or international cuisine nights or international move night and to develop some dynamic internationally themed programming that students across campus would be invited to,” said White.

Students looking to live in the Global Gateway House will pay the same as the other students in the Independent Houses.

The price for next year will be $3,635 according to the housing rates for the 2013-14 academic year, available on the Housing and Residence Life website.

“There is a programmatic fee which will be similar to other program specific residence fees,” said White.

According to the Office of International Programs website, the program fee for the Global Gateway house will be $150 a semester but will be waived for those in the community during the 2013-14 inaugural year.

“Inside of the Global Gateways application there is an opportunity for all applicants to select if they are interested in being considered for scholarships to waive any additional programmatic fees specific to the Gateways program,” said White.

Both female domestic students and international students can apply to be part of the Global Gateway House by filling out the application on the Office of International Programs website, oip.uncc.edu, as well as the Student Housing Application, housing.uncc.edu. The deadline for both of these applications is Thursday, Feb. 28.

Students with additional questions can contact the Office of International Programs through their email at international@uncc.edu.
