Looking for a bite to eat outside of Whitman’s dining halls? Not sure what your options are? Look no further! The Pioneer has compiled a list of Whitman favorites.

Casual Eats:

$$—Graze; 5 South Colville Street

Mon-Sat 10 am – 7:30 pm; Sun 10 am – 3:30 pm

A cute little sandwich joint located about a 10 minute walk from Reid Campus Center. Graze sells both vegetarian and cured meat sandwiches, soups, salads, and specialty glass bottle drinks. Popular sandwiches on the menu include the Veggie Torta, Butternut Squash, and Turkey Bacon. All sandwiches come with a side of salad or chips. Their menu can be found here.

$$—Red Reina Cuisine and Delicatessen; 202 East Main Street

Mon-Sat 11 am – 7:00 pm

Newly opened in 2012, Red Reina offers a simple assortment of meals created from regional and local sources. Advertised as “honest, clean, delicious and wholesome food, Red Reina offers foods like spanakopita, tuna salad sandwiches  and also offer the option for a “build your own sandwich.” Located on the left hand side of the street walking into downtown from campus, Red Reina is about a seven minute walk from Reid Campus Center.

$$—The Vegan Garden Cafe; 36 South Colville Street

Mon-Fri 11:00 am—7:30 pm; Sat & Sun 11:00 am—4:00 pm

As you may have guessed from the name, The Vegan Garden Cafe offers a vegan-friendly menu, with many items soy and gluten-free. In addition to a wide array of salads, soups, and sandwiches, the Vegan Garden is also popular for its vegan smoothies, fresh blended-juices, and cookies. Located right next door to the Patisserie and down the street from Graze, the Vegan Garden is a close walk from campus. The menu can be found here.

$$—Pho Sho; 123 West Alder Street

Tue-Sat 11 am – 2 pm; Tue-Sat 5 pm – 8 pm

Pho Sho is Walla Walla’s only Vietnamese pho restaurant. The restaurant offers a simple menu of traditional Vietnamese foods ranging from House Special Beef Pho to Egg Roll Noodle Salad. Pho Sho also offers a variety of eclectic drinks, including a sweet Vietnamese coffee served with a personal drip coffee maker. Though a bit of a farther walk from campus, about 15 minutes from Reid Campus Center, Pho Sho is a great fix for students craving fresh and simple Vietnamese food. The menu can be found here.

$$—Bacon and Eggs; 503 East Main Street

Mon-Tue, Thu-Sun 8 am – 2 pm

Bacon and Eggs opened across the street from Baker Ferguson Faculty Center in 2012 and has since become a favorite Whitman breakfast joint. According to the owners of the restaurant, “everything possible is locally grown or family farmed because we believe in supporting our community.” As the name indicates, the resturaunt offers a range of variously prepared eggs—Huevos Ranchos, Texas Eggs, and of course, Bacon and Eggs—but also offer a range of sweet, crabby, or vegan-friendly options. $$—Phuomys; 1528 East Isaacs Avenue

Mon-Thu, Sun 11 am – 9 pm; Fri 11 am – 10 pm; Sat 12 pm – 10 pm

Located a ways off campus (about a 20 minute walk or three minute drive), Phuomys is worth the walk for a Thai food craving. Items on the menu include Pad See Ew, Pad Thai, a various assortment of curries, Spring Rolls, and Thai teas. Most items come with a choice of meat or tofu and servers request a spice level for your dish ranging from one to five.

$—Berny’s Tacos; 1633 East Isaacs Avenue

Mon-Thu 7 am – 9:30 pm; Fri 7 am – 10 pm; Sat 10 am – 2 am; Sun 11 am – 9 pm

Also located a bit farther from campus, Bernys Tacos is a well known Walla Walla joint for those craving a quality burrito or taco. The former owners of Taqueria currently man Bernys and offer a wide selection of tacos, burritos, and tortas in addition to various desserts and drinks. Popular items include the Veggie Burrito and the Arroz con Leche. The menu can be found here.

 

More Formal Eats:

$$$$—Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen; 125 West Alder St

Tue-Sun 2 pm – 9 pm

Located right next door to Pho Sho, Saffron is a small and intimate restaurant offering a Mediterranean-based menu. Items on the menu include housemade pastas, lamb and steak. Because the restaurant runs on the smaller side, reservations are generally recommended; the restaurant takes reservation two months in advance and only take parties of six or less. $$—Olive Marketplace and Cafe; 21 East Main Street

8 am – 9 pm everyday

Located on the right-hand side of Main Street as you’re heading into downtown from campus, Olive is about a 10 minute walk from Reid Campus Center. Olive is generally a Whittie favorite, offerring more formal food for a cheaper price than most formal restaurants in the area. Good eats on the menu include Prosciutto and Grape Pizza, Mushroom Pot Pie and the Italian Salami Sandwich. Olive also offers an extensive breakfast menu that includes Smoked Salmon Bagel, Eggs Benedict and Four Cheese Polenta Cakes. The bakery case is also delicious with generally different desserts everyday ranging from Chocolate Mousse to Tres Leches cake. The menu can be found here.

$$$—Jacobi’s Cafe; 416 North 2nd Avenue

Tue-Thu 11 am – 9 pm, Fri-Sat 11 am – 10 pm

Jacobi’s is a favorite for classic Italian food in Walla Walla. Housed in a brick building formerly used as a railway portal and small retail center, Jacobi’s retains it’s historic charm, making it a favorite for a formal night out. The menu offers stuffed pastas (Butternut Squash Ravioli among others), seafood, and a variety of pastas. Fun fact: the building retains its original maple wood floorboards and houses fully restored passenger benches bearing the manufacturer’s original brass plates. $$—Green Spoon; 13 East Main Street

Mon-Sat 11 am – 3 pm, Sun 8 am – 3 pm

Located in the heart of downtown Walla Walla, Green Spoon is a delicious place to stop in for breakfast. Some items on the Brunch menu include the Northwest Fisherman, Grilled Cheese, and the Vegan Breakfast Stack. The menu for Green Spoon can be found here.
