How elated I am to divulge upon one of Winston-Salem’s best kept dining secrets — Paul’s Fine Italian Dining. Located on Robinhood Road, just a short distance from The Fresh Market, the eatery offers the best Italian cuisine in the city. Countless recommendations led me there and it immediately became my favorite restaurant around.
We know we all somewhat loathe the soggy excuse for pasta the Pit serves. There are slim pickings for Italian food in Winston. While many Wake students fancy Elizabeth’s Italian, on University Parkway, having grown up on pasta my whole life, I’m a bit of a finicky Italian food critic. My Italian instructor, Professoressa Morosini, told our class one morning that her friend from Sardinia, Italy, owns Paul’s and that it is authentic and simply delicious. I took a few friends out to put it to the test. We were greeted with a sumptuous warm basket of assorted Italian focaccias and breads, and we all ordered various pasta dishes to share. The gnocchi, the rigatoni alla vodka, the linguini pescatore and the fettuccine alfredo were all world-class. The environment is somewhat of a geographical anomaly — you don’t’ see restaurants like this around here. The interior is decorated with sprinkle lights, ivy, rustic copper pots and soothing blue walls. It’s quaint, romantic and intimate. The owner, Paul, greets his customers warmly at the entrance and walks around the restaurant, ensuring his patrons enjoy their meals. This restaurant is simply adorable. We left an hour later satiated and incredibly satisfied with our meals, which one needs from time to time to vary the Pit-Benson-Subway routine. I liked it so much that I took my mother there when she visited from DC, and she loved everything about it. My boyfriend and I enjoy going there on dates as well. It’s a great place to take someone special for some extra points. There’s nothing like a delicious bowl of rich, fresh pasta to nourish one’s stomach (and heart!)
