The Chi Upsilon Sigma National Sorority hosted its sixth annual Weak Hearts Need Not Apply Stroll Competition on Saturday, March 23 in McKnight Hall. Viewers drove miles from as far as Tampa, Fla., and Baltimore, Md., to support.

The show was co-hosted by Niners on the Weekend (NOW), a division of the Campus Activities Board. This is the third year in which NOW has co-hosted the event, according to James Contratto, assistant director of Student Activities for Weekend Programs and Student Organizations.

This annual competition has become a great way for fraternities and sororities to unite within one another.

“Strolling to me is synchronized line dancing. It’s moving in uniform with your brother or sister to show unity and a bond,” said Tagreed ‘Tina’ Nafisi, president of Corazones Unidos Siempre, Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc.

Multicultural sororities and fraternities from campus came out to compete. The groups had three rounds to prove themselves to the judges. They were judged based on criteria that are kept between the judges only.

Judges included Nadia Campbelle, assistant director of the center for leadership development, Joseph Pohlheber, a brother of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Donald Littlejohn, a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Michelle Guobadia, the director of Fraternity and Sorority Life and a sister of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. and Cecilia Aponte, a sister of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority Inc.

The music was definitely a big part of the competition and assisted in keeping the crowd excited for what was to come next, as shown by the attendees dancing in the crowd. The soundtrack of the show included music from artists such as Chief Keef, Macklemore, Crime Mob and Justin Timberlake.

The competition ended in a victory for the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc0rporated. The Psi Sigma Phi chapter followed in second and the sisters of Lamba Theta Alpha came in third.

Following the competition, the Deltas surrounded their trophy and took photos. It took them about a month to prepare for this competition, according to one of their sisters.

A portion of the proceeds from admission goes to the I Have A Dream Foundation, Chi Upsilon Sigma’s National Philanthropy.

“Every year we raise funds through various activities for our philanthropy but our stroll competition is where we raise the most! Our sorority is based on the values of education. That is why our motto is ‘wisdom through education.’”

“With that being said, it is only right for our philanthropy to be one that helps those in need of help trying to attain a proper education,” said Nafisi.
